Psychological Testing
The Counseling Center is proud to offer psychological testing! Psychological and neuropsychological testing are valuable assessment tools used to evaluate an individual’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. These tests offer comprehensive insights into a person’s strengths, weaknesses, and areas of difficulty, providing crucial information for various purposes.
Benefits of Psychological and Neuropsychological Testing:
- Accurate Diagnosis: Testing plays a vital role in diagnosing a wide range of psychological and neuropsychological conditions. By identifying specific symptoms and patterns, clinicians can accurately diagnose conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, learning disabilities, and neurodegenerative disorders.
- Treatment Planning: Test results serve as a roadmap for treatment planning. They help clinicians tailor interventions to address specific needs and challenges. For example, if testing reveals deficits in attention and executive functioning, cognitive-behavioral therapy or medication may be recommended.
- Progress Monitoring: Testing enables clinicians to track treatment progress over time. By comparing baseline test results with subsequent assessments, they can evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and make necessary adjustments.
- Educational Planning: Psychological and neuropsychological testing is instrumental in developing educational plans for children and adolescents with learning disabilities. Test results pinpoint specific areas of difficulty, such as reading comprehension or mathematical reasoning, allowing educators to create individualized learning strategies.
- Vocational Planning: Testing can help individuals make informed decisions about their career choices by identifying their strengths, interests, and potential challenges. By understanding their cognitive and emotional profile, individuals can explore careers that align with their abilities and preferences.
When considering psychological or neuropsychological testing, choosing a qualified professional with experience administering and interpreting these tests is essential. A thorough evaluation process and accurate interpretation of test results are crucial for obtaining meaningful insights and making informed decisions.
What to expect?
First, you would meet with a psychologist to do a one-hour interview to determine: (a) if testing is necessary (i.e., sometimes we can figure things out just by doing a thorough interview); and (b) what tests are necessary. Next, you (or your child) will come back to complete approximately 3 hours of face-to-face testing. Finally, within approximately two weeks, we will sit down with you during a one-hour interview to go through all the results. You will receive a copy of these results, which you can use to assist in setting up other services (e.g., educational accommodations).
Who is this service intended for?
- Participants should be verbal and fluent in English. (We do not have a test in Spanish.)
- The person who is being tested needs to be over the age of 6.
- The person needs to be able to follow verbal instructions and be alone with the person administering the tests. (This is a requirement for most tests.)
- The results of testing should not be used for forensic purposes or for the court (i.e., no child custody evaluations or competency to stand trial).
- As of right now, we can only reimburse persons with Select Health Insurance.
