Gary Goodrich, Ph.D.

I was in the ER when a mom brought in her son who had broken his arm. The little guy became frantic as the doctor tried to evaluate: “No, don’t touch it!” Then little guy had an idea, holding up his other arm and brightly suggesting, “Here, look at this arm.” Psychotherapy works best when we go to the brokenness of our hearts, not getting distracted by blame, who else should change, or what’s unfair on our planet. Reverence and irreverence, support and confrontation, cold numbers and warm intuition: I blend them all. I also keep in mind the end goal: get well enough, close out psychotherapy, and get on with living.
